Hebrews 2:16 For surely it is not angels that he helps, but he helps the offspring of Abraham.

Jesus did not die for the angels but people. Angels do not need a redeemer because they have not sinned. They are able to be in God’s presence because of their purity. Those angels that fell with Satan stand judged because of their rebellion (Matthew 25:41; Colossians 2:15; 2 Peter 2:4). The Bible even speaks of believers judging angels (1 Corinthians 6:1). Specifically, Jesus died for the offspring of Abraham. At first, we might read this to refer only to Jews, but the Bible teaches that Jesus died for the whole world. It is only those who are children of Abraham by faith, both Jew and Gentile, who believe and receive the atonement provided by Jesus’ sacrifice. The key point the author is making is that Jesus’ death was for human beings and not angels. In order to make atonement for humans, the Son needed to become one with them. Otherwise, the Son had no need to become human and die on the cross. The logic is simple behind this verse. The author is attempting to show the necessity of Jesus’ humanity. This will be the foundation for everything else in this book.
