Hebrews 4:4-5 For somewhere he has spoken about the seventh day in these words: “On the seventh day God rested from all his works.” And again in the passage above he says, “They shall never enter my rest.”

The author returns to Psalm 95, repeating the key ideas for emphasis. He wants to make sure that the readers get the message and understand the seriousness of this idea because their salvation depends on it. The author quotes from Genesis 2:2 in reference to the Sabbath to show that God sets the pattern for resting. The Sabbath represents God’s blessing and a time to be reflective about God’s promises and the relationship we can have with God. Creation lived in the afterglow of this rest and blessing. The Sabbath rest is available for those who put their faith in Christ. Those who refuse to believe in Jesus and instead harden their hearts in disbelief will not be able to experience this rest. The author repeats the phrase from Psalm 95 as a form of warning to the readers. This rest begins as a spiritual peace and goes outward to affect our whole lives. This becomes a lifestyle of peace with all people and holiness (Hebrews 12:14). Many of the themes of Hebrews are interwoven and linked. The themes of this chapter will be repeated and applied in later passages.
