Hebrews 5:13 for everyone who lives on milk is unskilled in the word of righteousness, since he is a child.

The author of this epistle is exhorting the readers to grow up in their faith. They have failed to grow because they have become hard of hearing. This basically means that they have not obeyed God’s promises about Jesus but have continued to struggle against sin. If they continue to live off of milk, they will not be able to grow. They will not be able to understand “the word of righteousness.” This “word” is most basically the gospel message that the author has just explained. More specially, this word is recorded in the Scripture which speaks to the deepest part of our souls (Hebrews 4:12). If the reader do not heed what the Scripture says, they will not be able to grow. There is a level of understanding that comes only with living out our faith. This understanding is not simply intellectual but spiritual. It is what the Holy Spirit teaches us. Paul talked of this as the “mind of Christ” which the Holy Spirit teaches us (1 Corinthians 2:6-16).  The word is called “righteousness” because it directs how we should live in our battle against sin. With Jesus as our advocate and high priest who opens the way to the Father, we have a resource that can help us overcome our doubts and fears and live in victory. The choice is up to us. Will we grow in our skill of interpretation and application or will we continue in our ignorance due to unbelief?
