Hebrews 11:39-40 39 And all these, though commended through their faith, did not receive what was promised,40 since God had provided something better for us, that apart from us they should not be made perfect.

The heroes of faith followed God’s promises but there was a greater promise they did not experience. All the promises in the past pointed ahead to God’s greatest promise in Christ. They prepared the way in one way or another. The past was leading to the future. This does not mean that God was cruel to people in the past by withholding something greater. Rather, God was waiting for the right time in history for Christ to come (Galatians 4:4). Those who have faith get to participate in this promise. The readers are part of this group who experience God’s promise if they trust in Jesus as their savior. Through this faith in God’s promise of Jesus Christ, we complete the faith of the past. Those of the Old Testament period longed for what we now have at our disposal. We should not waste God’s promise and ruin the faith of the past. We have inherited God’s story of promise and hope. We must put our faith in this promise. The focus of this faith is Jesus.
