Hebrews 13:8 Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.
There is a movement of thought today called “open theism” that claims that God’s character does not change but God does not know everything, in particular, what will happen in the future. God changes and grows with humanity. This verse from Hebrews seems to contradict this philosophy. The sovereignty of Jesus as the Son of God is indisputable in the Epistle to the Hebrews. This document begins with claims of the superiority of the Son over the angels, and later over sin and death. In the present context, this statement relates back to the “the word of God” from v. 7. The gospel does not change because Jesus does not change. If anyone preaches something that is not what the church has taught, then this teaching should be rejected (see Galatians 1:10). We must know the gospel message well so that we can discern when there is a deviation from what the Bible teaches. We must also test our teachers and leaders so that they know the gospel. Anyone who deviates from the gospel should not be a leader or teacher. We must also discern between items that are open to interpretation or opinion and what is crucial and central to the faith. Our assurance of the message is built upon the incarnated and unchanging Jesus Christ.
