Romans 8:26-27  In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans. 27 And he who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for God’s people in accordance with the will of God.

We do not always have the words for the deep feelings and thoughts we have. Speaking those thoughts through prayer is difficult. We may have groans and sorrows from our struggles in this world as we do our best to live out our faith. The Holy Spirit is our Comforter and Advocate who  helps us during our weak moments, which are many. The key idea is that the Holy Spirit helps us discern God’s will and to pray according to this direction. This type of discovery often takes time. The old timers called it “praying through.” This is basically praying about something until the hope, faith, and confidence are strong. At first, a person may only groan inwardly without any clear direction or assurance. As one prays, the Holy Spirit builds faith and helps the person conform his or her prayer more to God’s will and direction. God knows our hearts, which means our motives and fears. The Holy Spirit may expose some of our misguided thinking and help us realign our lives with God’s purposes and will.
