Romans 11:24 After all, if you were cut out of an olive tree that is wild by nature, and contrary to nature were grafted into a cultivated olive tree, how much more readily will these, the natural branches, be grafted into their own olive tree!
Paul uses a “how much more” approach to show how great it would be for the Jews to come to faith in Jesus as their Messiah. It is a miracle that Gentiles can become part of God’s people. This is a fulfillment of many prophecies in the Old Testament. God’s design is for all people. God’s plan was Israel to be the instrument through which this would happen. In the first century, it was through the earliest believers who were Jews that the promise of salvation by grace began to go out to the world. Many Jews of that day rejected the Messiah. This rejection has continued over the centuries. I don’t know well the current expectations and beliefs of modern Jews. It would be a worthwhile study to explore this. Many Jews are coming to believe and are called “Messianic Jews.” It would send a message to the world if more Jews became believers. This is Paul’s hope in this letter. He believes God will answer that prayer based on promises made in the Old Testament. Anyone can be grafted into the olive tree of God’s people if they only believe.
