Romans 13:8 Owe no one anything, except to love each other, for the one who loves another has fulfilled the law.

So many people are in debt. Some debt is necessary in our modern world, such as buying a house, and sometimes a car. The problem with debt is that is takes away financial freedom. Consumer debt is especially a problem with maxed out credit cards with high interest. It is almost impossible for some people to get out of debt. Paul urges the Romans to owe nothing except love. Financial debt is a form of slavery. Love brings freedom because no one can stop us from loving. Paul alludes to what Jesus taught: love fulfills all the law. Love is the law of Christ. Christ died out of and for love. Love within the church is source for all it does and is. This love must not be shown only towards friends but also enemies. That can be difficult part. This verse is about two types of responsibility: financial stewardship, to make sure that we spend only what we have, and relational stewardship, love all people, especially those in the church. The love in the church should flow out to unbelievers so much, that they will say, look how they love one another.
