Romans 14:9 For to this end Christ died and lived again, that he might be Lord both of the dead and of the living.

The reason Jesus came is to reveal the love of God and to help humanity experience this love in the fullest way. Salvation is a gift of love. Jesus came so that the world could recognize God’s love and experience through faith in Jesus. The “for” in this verse links it to v. 8. Jesus died on the cross and rose from the grave so that we might know ourselves what it means to live with Him as Lord and for us to experience resurrection life. This verse builds on what Paul wrote earlier in Romans 6:1-11. That context deals specifically with the problem and power of sin. Sin’s control is removed when we give ourselves totally to the Lordship of Christ. He becomes for us what He is already: Lord and Master. He takes the position of control. From this position, He is able to guide us and teach us through the Holy Spirit what it means to love others unconditionally. Paul is dealing with relationships in this passage. Relationship problems often occur when people think about themselves, are selfish, or follow the way of the flesh. So many problems in relationships could be solved if people put Jesus first and let the Holy Spirit grow within them love.
