1 Corinthians 13:6 Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth.
This is the final negative statement. It could be speaking to how the Corinthians had a basic disregard for personal and community holiness evidenced in chapters 5-11. They accepted evil in their midst and may have even celebrated some of it. The key question here is, what is considered “evil”? The word is better translated as “unrighteousness” or “injustice.” This could be interpreted from a religious perspective as action that is against God’s will and law, or it could be interpreted in a political perspective as accepting and even rejoicing in lawlessness. God’s laws reveal truth. God’s word is truth (Ephesians 1:13; 2 Timothy 2:15; Col. 1:5; James 1:18). ‘The entirety of your word is truth’ (Psalm 119:160). Love rejoices in what God has revealed and in those who follow it. Love promotes justice and peace which will be the result of people obeying God’s commands. Disobedience and selfishness result in rejoicing in evil.
