1 Corinthians 15:37-38 And what you sow is not the body that is to be, but a bare kernel, perhaps of wheat or of some other grain. 38 But God gives it a body as he has chosen, and to each kind of seed its own body.
The analogy of a dead seed continues in these verses. The body we have now is not God’s final plan for us. The physical body we have now is a temporary dwelling place for us. The present body dies and is raised in a new form of existence. Paul gives the example of a grain of wheat or similar grain seeds. When we look at such a seed, it is dead, dry, and lifeless. The plant that grows from this seed looks nothing like the seed. It is green grass and not a dried seed. The same is true for all seeds. They look nothing like the plants they become. Yet, both the seed and the plant are still called “wheat.” They share the same essence even though they are in different forms. This is the way God has designed the world and the way God has purposed for humanity. God has designed the human body to work well in the present context. We can adapt to climates, use our various appendages and senses to carry out God’s plan for us, sophisticated brains to think, learn, pray, and communicate, and so many other things that set us apart from the animal world. This body is special in many ways. It will die like a seed but then be recreated into something different that will serve God’s purposes for us in eternity. We can only imagine what this might be like.
