Luke 8:11-14 11Now the parable is this: The seed is the word of God. 12And the ones along the path are those who have heard; then the devil comes and takes away the word from their hearts, so that by not believing they might not be saved. 13And the ones on the rock are those who hear the word and receive it with joy, but they have no root; they believe for a while, and in a time of testing fall away. 14And for those that fell among the thorns, they are those who hear, but as they go, they are choked by the cares and riches and pleasures of life, and their fruit does not mature.
The disciples needed several clues in order to understand the parable of the seed. Each part of the parable represents something related to God’s kingdom. The seed represents the word of God. There are several ways to interpret this phrase, depending on which angle one looks at it. Each angle is part of the whole. In the context of the kingdom proclamation, the word represents the teachings of Jesus. In a broader sense, the word can refer to all of God’s revelation through Scripture, which contains his word to humanity. In an individual sense, the word may also represent the Spirit-inspired proclamation of the gospel. God’s word comes to us in many forms. We can be assured that it is indeed God’s word if it is consistent with what has been revealed in the Bible, which is our test for all other revelation. The focus of the word is Jesus and the application is life in his kingdom.
The word of the gospel is received in different ways or conditions. The hardened soil of the path represents people who hardened their hearts by not believing the gospel. The devil comes along and deceives them and pulls them further into darkness. The world and its false promises are deceiving with empty promises of happiness and peace. When one’s focus is away from the True Source of Life, the devil’s temptations look appeasing. The soil had the wrong condition to begin with because of people’s hardened hearts.
The rocky soil represents those who are excited about the gospel, possibly because of its promises like eternal life, but these people fail to grow in their faith. They feel the excitement after a confession of faith but then are easily pulled back into their old lives because of temptation. They have no deep root growing stronger in God’s word. Every new believer will be tested, especially when he or she returns to the environment of old friends and situations. It is crucial that new believers have a close companion to guide them in their new faith.
The third type of soil with thorny weeds gives the vivid image of someone who thinks he or she is healthy spiritually because of outward religious actions but inside struggles to be committed to God. This person has misplaced priorities. The seed has sprouted and is growing but does not produce a harvest because it is actually not a healthy plant. Materialism can too easily creep into a Christian’s life and take our eyes off of Jesus and onto ourselves. To go on their way suggests that people like this start off with good intentions but, at some point, follow their own thinking and desires. They do not go Jesus’ way, which is to the cross of commitment and dependency upon God.
