John 2:12 12After this he went down to Capernaum, and his mother and his brothers and his disciples also stayed there for a many days.
This verse serves as a conclusion to the whole event at the wedding and a transition to future activities. John uses the phrase after this to transition into a new story (2:12; 3:22; 5:1, 14; 6:1; 7:1; 11:19–28, 38). Although it is short, this verse offers a few insights into Jesus’ ministry and family. First, Jesus moved his ministry to Capernaum, which was on the northwest shore of Galilee, about sixteen miles east-northeast of Cana. This village and the surrounding area became a central place of his ministry. Second, we find out that the wedding was a family ordeal, with Jesus’ mother and brothers present. There is no mention of sisters (see Matthew 13:56; Mark 6:3). Jesus had a family and siblings, of which he was the oldest. The other children were his half brothers and sisters, the children born from Joseph and Mary. This note draws out the further significance of Jesus being human and normal like other people. Third, the disciples chose to stay with Jesus and learn more from him. They were now his disciples and no longer John’s.
The invitation to readers is to join in believing in Jesus and follow him. The case for faith is building with each testimony and proclamation about Jesus. The question is whether we, as readers, will accept the claims about him and also believe in his name.
