Revelation 3:4 4Yet you have still a few names in Sardis who have not soiled their garments, and they will walk with me in white, because they are worthy.

Like most churches, the church in Sardis had a faithful remnant who had not compromised their faith or morality but still lived in obedience and holiness. The word few catches one’s attention. Names refer to those who have not soiled their garments. Both the name of a person and what that person wears are significant images in Revelation. Both represent a person’s character, and by extension, core beliefs and lifestyle. Not many in the church had remained faithful. The majority had grown stale spiritually and needed a revival. Like ancient Israel during the days of the divided kingdoms, when God raised prophets to call the people to repent, in this church, certain persons had remained pure and dedicated.

Churches and denominations are facing difficult decisions as the temptation to compromise with culture and drift from orthodox, Bible-based teaching increases. A division has occurred between those who have remained true to biblical faith and those who have moved toward theological and moral compromise. The situation we see today is not new. It is a crisis that has been around since the earliest days of the church and stretches back far into the history of ancient Israel because it is rooted in the core human problem of sin.

This verse also gives a promise to those who walk with Jesus. Those who remain faithful will be found worthy. They have remained pure, undefiled, and not compromising with sin. A person must make a choice consciously, with commitment and consecration, because it does not come naturally or easily. Those in Sardis would understand the image of being dressed in white because people in the city dressed in white clothes when a triumphant Roman parade of soldiers marched through town. White represents purity, power, and victory in Revelation. Only those who remain true to Jesus are granted this honor. Worthiness comes in remembering the gospel and following its truth (verse 3). We today are blessed with the full revelation of God and must be devoted to spiritual growth so that we know the truth and how to live it out in our own contexts.
