1 Timothy 4:7-8
7 Have nothing to do with godless myths and old wives’ tales; rather, train yourself to be godly. 8 For physical training is of some value, but godliness has value for all things, holding promise for both the present life and the life to come.
There are many interesting things to grab our attention these days. Sometimes I just sit and surf the internet, going from one link to another, basically wasting time. There is nothing wrong in just relaxing and wasting time doing nothing of value. These times can be refreshing. But some things that grab out attention that we think are important are actually trivial. Some of the Ephesians had gotten caught up in “godless myths and old wives’ tales.” These were probably interesting. They may have even sounded religious and important. But they had no value for spiritual growth. Sometimes the things that bring spiritual growth to us will take exertion of effort. The old saying is true when it comes to spiritual growth: no pain . . . no gain. Perhaps there are times when we should just close up the computer, set down the novel, or put aside whatever grabs our attention, and focus on things that produce godliness. The results will be eternal.
