1 Timothy 4:15
Be diligent in these matters; give yourself wholly to them, so that everyone may see your progress.
The word that sticks out to me here is “progress.” Is there enough evidence of our spiritual growth that others can see a change? I have found human life and human behavior to be very subtle at times. It is often not easy to see change in people’s lives because so much of who we are is linked to our personalities. Not many people make dramatic changes over night. Rather, it is the small decisions we make every day that begin to add up and set a new direction for our lives. The best way to experience change is to give ourselves wholly to the right decisions. This will take focus and attention. I for one cannot be 100% all the time. Engines cannot run at 100% all the time otherwise, they overheat and burnout. Neither can people. We need our down times. But at least we can have a clear and firm direction in which to go.
