1 Corinthians 1: 5-6
For in him you have been enriched in every way—with all kinds of speech and with all knowledge—God thus confirming our testimony about Christ among you.
Jesus really does make a difference in how we think and what we say. Paul thanks God for two things that were actually problems in Corinth: speaking (ch. 14) and knowledge (ch. 8). But God was already at work making a difference in the lives of the Corinthians. They had a ways to go, but the work of the Holy Spirit was clearly present. How? Because of the growing tension they had with their culture. When the Holy Spirit begins to teach us the mind of Christ, we will begin to change. Part of this change will involve feeling an unease about how we have been living or speaking. This is the first sign that we are indeed changing and that the mind of Christ is starting to change us. The more we grow in Christ, the more we will feel this tension. In fact, once we have committed ourselves totally to Christ in entire sanctification, we feel extreme tension with the world around us. We can no longer live like the world because we follow a different standard. The Corinthians were on their way but had still felt too comfortable in the world. Paul urges them in this letter to keep going and to let the mind of Christ totally infiltrate their thinking and speaking.
