Hebrews 10:11-13 And every priest stands daily at his service, offering repeatedly the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins. 12 But when Christ had offered for all time a single sacrifice for sins, he sat down at the right hand of God, 13 waiting from that time until his enemies should be made a footstool for his feet.
The author now emphasizes the one time sacrifice of Jesus. His death on the cross was sufficient for sin. It completed took care of the problem and penalty of sin. Jesus as high priest of the special order of Melchizedek did not offer an animal for himself because he was sinless. Instead, he offered himself like a lamb without blemish (1 Peter 1:19). That one time sacrifice for sin was God’s plan before creation. Everything in the Old Testament led up to this. Verse 12 assumes Jesus’ resurrection because after his death he was exalted to the right hand of God, the highest conceivable place of honor. This verse repeats the idea of 1:3, 13; 8:1. Verse 13 is a reference to Jesus’ second coming and a quote from Psalm 110:1. When he comes again, all wrong will be righted, the good will be rewarded, and evil will be punished. It will be the completion of this age of sin that has caused humanity to struggle since the time of Adam and Eve. These verses express the greatest hope of believers: that we can be free from sin and have eternal life with God through what Jesus has done on the cross for us.
