1 Corinthians 1:17

For Christ did not send me to baptize, but to preach the gospel—not with wisdom and eloquence, lest the cross of Christ be emptied of its power.

There is no substitute for careful sermon preparation and presentation. But the fanciness of the presentation is not what changes people’s lives. It is the power of the gospel. Those who preach are but messengers and witnesses of the transforming grace of God in Christ. Anytime people begin to think that they are good preachers, they are in danger of substituting the power of the gospel with their own power. Good preaching begins with a heavy dose of humility. A good preacher is one who has spent time listening to God and wrestling with Scripture. There are enough ticklers of ears in this world but few preachers of the gospel. Conviction is more important than eloquence in preaching. Preaching from the heart and not just the head is what people need. They need a little big of head. Paul could argue with the best philosophers and Jewish leaders of his day, but he came to Corinth with a simple message that spoke to people’s needs. This is a good example for preachers today, especially when we are competing with so much entertainment.
