Hebrews 13:7 Remember your leaders, those who spoke to you the word of God. Consider the outcome of their way of life, and imitate their faith.
There are many calls to imitate godly leaders in the New Testament. Part of the discipleship journey is to learn from Christlike teachers and leaders. Most people do not have the opportunity to be around famous church leaders. The only leaders they see are those in their local church. The pastor is one of those key leaders. It is crucial that especially pastors set a good example (1 Timothy 4:2) for the flock. The shepherd is in charge of the care of the sheep. A poor shepherd can potentially lead the sheep down the wrong path. The author here focuses upon those leaders who teach the word of God. The author connects the word that is spoken and the life of the speaker. If there is a disconnect between these two, then the example and leadership are bad. The leaders must “practice what they preach.” There are three things the leader must do: 1) preach the word of God faithfully, clearly, and accurately; 2) life an outstanding and exemplary life that evidences genuine commitment and relationship to God; and 3) a faith in God that confirms the lifestyle is genuine and the word is sincere. This puts a lot of responsibility on the leader. But interestingly, the author is speaking to the church who should look to these people. Churches must be careful not to ignore godly leaders, especially in regards to faithful preaching and calls to commitment. The leader has his or her part in this, but the church must be willing to follow this leadership. When both groups are faithful and obedient to God’s word, the church will be healthy, strong, and growing.
