Romans 8:3-4 For God has done what the law, weakened by the flesh, could not do. By sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and for sin, he condemned sin in the flesh, in order that the righteous requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.

Obedience to the law cannot make us righteous because we are not able to keep it enough. On our own strength, we cannot overcome the power of sin. Only God can overcome our problem, and God did this by sending his Son in human likeness to do what we cannot do. Attempting to obey the law in order to be righteous before God is futile because the power of sin is too great (7:7-24). Jesus identified with us in our weakness, thereby becoming the perfect sacrifice for sin. The law requires a holy life of love (Romans 13:8, 10), which is impossible without the Spirit’s help. The Spirit pours out God’s love in our hearts (Romans 5:5), helping us to fulfill God’s purpose for us. Fully met indicates God wants to sanctify us completely. Paul lays out the promise clearly but also implies the crucial required decision. Only those who live in obedience to the Spirit’s leading fulfill the law. Living to please the flesh distorts the law and allows sin to be in control, leading to condemnation.
