1 Corinthians 6:16
Or do you not know that he who is joined to a prostitute becomes one body with her? For, as it is written, “The two will become one flesh.”
Prostitution is a distortion of the unity God has designed for a married man and woman. The message of this verse is obvious. Its implications, however, are more challenging in a culture where marriage is being redefined. There is nothing more powerful that a man and woman united in heart, soul, mind, and body. Marriage is part of God’s plan for humanity. There are exceptions to this, and Paul will talk about those in ch. 7. But generally speaking marriage provides a unique opportunity for God to work in people’s lives. Taking our unity in body, soul, mind, or heart and sharing it with someone outside of marriage will lead to problems. We begin to treat the other person as an object for our own pleasure rather than one for whom Christ died. In our day, sexuality is one of the highest forms of personal pleasure, at least that is what the media tells us. We don’t often hear about the brokenness that results, unless we succumb to reading the grocery store tabloids and the latest breakup gossip. As Christians, we should bear witness to the greatness of marriage. We must preserve it, strengthen it, and model it. The next generation is watching what we do.
