1 Corinthians 11:27-28

So then, whoever eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty of sinning against the body and blood of the Lord. Everyone ought to examine themselves before they eat of the bread and drink from the cup.

There are several serious matters when we participate in the Lord’s Supper. These can be divided into three relationships:

  1. Relationship with God: We often use the word “communion” for the Lord’s Supper. Part of the reason for this is that it is an opportunity for us to fellowship with God and to allow the Holy Spirit to transform our lives into the likeness of the One who died for us. We must be open to this grace and allow this experience to change us and grow us into the mind of Christ. It also is an opportunity for us to realign our lives, which may require confession of sin.
  2. Relationship with Ourselves: As we fellowship with the Spirit, we are given choices to accept the Spirit’s leading or to turn our own way. Spiritual growth will also bring choices. Will we be honest with ourselves as we look unto the cross, or will be make the symbols of bread and cup empty of meaning and power by rejecting God’s grace?
  3. Relationship with Others: When we allow the Holy Spirit to change us and grow us deeper in love with God, we will find ourselves growing deeper in love with other people. If we reject the Holy Spirit’s leading, we will find relationships with others in the church and outside the church will begin to deteriorate. This was one of the problems in the church in Corinth. The Lord’s Supper provides the church the opportunity to grow deeper in love with one another as each person obeys the Holy Spirit.
