1 Corinthians 11:25-26
In the same way, after supper he took the cup, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood; do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me.” For whenever you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes.
One of the most memorable sharing of the cup of the Lord’s Supper was when I picked fresh grapes Sunday afternoon and prepared juice for the evening service. The juice was not even a few hours old. The congregations faces lit up when they tasted the juice. It was really good and reminded us that the Lord tastes good to our souls and satisfies our deepest needs. People thirst for meaning and try to satisfy this with things that only bring more hunger and emptiness. The cup offers newness because the blood of Jesus ever cleanses us and makes us whole. We must never forget what Jesus has done for us. It was in that selfless act that we know the depth of divine love for us. Someday we will sit around the table with the Lord and have a great feast. Until that time, we must keep remembering the cross. Looking back will give us strength for the presence and hope for the future.
