1 Timothy 2:
1 I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people— 2 for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness.
We live in a politically charged time. I have purposely not listened to talk radio for several weeks as I drive my car. I am just tired of everything for now. There are three approaches we could take to politics:
- Ambivalence: We just ignore it all.
- Rejection: We get so uptight about certain politicians or candidates.
- Acceptance: We fight for our candidates.
Paul charges Timothy and the Ephesian church with a four alternative: prayer. There is a purpose for this prayer. If our nation is at peace, we will be better able to preach the gospel. We will be able to live by our convictions. During this political season, pursuing holiness and peace are good goals for God’s people (see Hebrews 12:14).
