1 Corinthians 1:19
“I will destroy the wisdom of the wise;
the intelligence of the intelligent I will frustrate.”
I have met a lot of people who think they are pretty smart, and they are in the world’s standards. Can we figure out God and God’s ways? Some people think we can, that God can be thought of in logical ways. Paul quotes Isaiah 29:14 here to remind the Corinthians that human power and ability cannot comprehend the awesomeness of what God in Christ has done for us. The gospel has a certain logic to it, but it is also mysterious. Anytime we think we have figured out God, we have actually put God into a box of our own making. We have really just made our own “god.” There are certain theological movements today that essentially do just that: take the mysterious God and logically put God into a box of their own making. Philosophy can only go so far until it runs into the wall of holiness. At that point, we must rely on revelation.
