1 Corinthians 1:27

But God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise; God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong.

This verse reveals a common pattern God uses throughout history. Some of the most effective servants of God throughout the ages have been simple people. God will use some educated and strong people at times for special purposes, but what really makes the world go around are simple servants. This reversal is found throughout the Bible as God called and used people like Moses, David, Jeremiah, and others. This reversal is best seen in the cross. As we approach Holy Week next week and Good Friday, this is a good time to think about just how significant Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross was. All of time and eternity were changed by what was viewed as a failure in the world’s eyes. The cross sets the pattern for how we can and should live. What will make a difference in the world is not loud protests but quiet service. This is counter-cultural and will take sacrifice on our part. One of the greatest sacrifices we must give is our will, imagination, and view of ourselves. When God is in charge of our lives, we can be used by Him to change the world through our quiet influence.
