1 Corinthians 9:20-23

20 To the Jews I became like a Jew, to win the Jews.To those under the law I became like one under the law (though I myself am not under the law), so as to win those under the law. 21 To those not having the law I became like one not having the law (though I am not free from God’s law but am under Christ’s law), so as to win those not having the law. 22 To the weak I became weak, to win the weak. I have become all things to all people so that by all possible means I might save some. 23 I do all this for the sake of the gospel, that I may share in its blessings.

The problem many of us face is being stuck in a rut. We like things comfortable and controllable. We develop our traditions and habits because these make us comfortable. Paul was flexible in order to move the mission forward. He approached people according to their needs. He started where they were.

It can be a challenge to adjust to the needs of the context. What does it require?

  1. Humility, to realize that our ways of life or thinking are not the only ways.
  2. Listening skills, to hear what and how those around us communicate.
  3. Willingness to change how we do things.

These are good skills for anyone to practice but are especially needed in local churches. Our culture is changing and we must follow Paul’s example and learn how to contextualize.
