1 Peter 1:24-25 For,“All people are like grass, and all their glory is like the flowers of the field; the grass withers and the flowers fall, but the word of the Lord endures forever.” And this is the word that was preached to you.
The world is full of advice, technology, and argumentation. The world is very competitive. There is some truth from the world’s perspective that the fittest are those who survive. Humanism is the belief that people can improve the world through human effort, ingenuity, and technology–without any divine intervention. People are the center of the world. Peter quotes Isaiah 40:6-8 to show that human effort fails because it is temporary. It cannot solve the deep problems of human existence. It grows and shines for a time then withers away.
The word of the Lord endures forever. Peter has a specific word in mind here, namely, the good news about Jesus. The gospel is what is eternal. It is what lasts forever. It is God’s eternal plan. Paul and Peter both wrote about how the coming of Jesus was God’s plan before time began. Peter applies this cosmic and eternal message to his readers. This is the message each of them had heard and received. Each believer is connected to God’s eternal plan when he or she believes in this message. We become participants in God’s eternal plan when we believe and receive it through faith.
