Romans 1:20 For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that people are without excuse.
The existence of a creator should be self evident through general revelation in nature. Creation shows an intelligence and organization to it. This idea has been threatened by the theory of evolution and that creation developed out of its own resources and chances. It is difficult to reconcile these two perspectives, although some theologians attempt to do that. Paul’s point in this passage is that creation is evidence enough that people should have an awareness of something beyond this physical existence. Ecclesiastes 3:11 reminds us, “He has made everything beautiful in its time. He has also set eternity in the human heart; yet no one can fathom what God has done from beginning to end.” The only way to ignore this evidence is to turn to self, sin, and the false promises of this world. The temptations of this world will blind us to God’s existence and purposes. If we remove God from the picture of our lives, we will succumb to the problems of this world, which may lead us to self-destruction. This verse adds a proof to Paul’s argument and shows that people have no excuse for some form of belief in God, no matter how skewed or distorted this may be.
