Romans 3:5-6  But if our unrighteousness brings out God’s righteousness more clearly, what shall we say? That God is unjust in bringing his wrath on us? (I am using a human argument.) Certainly not! If that were so, how could God judge the world?

These verses are showing the clear contrast between God’s faithfulness and people’s unfaithfulness. God is just in how he deals with humanity. We all have broken God’s laws, either those written on paper or on the heart, therefore God is just to measure us against the laws and to pronounce us guilty of sin. We deserve God’s wrath. God’s wrath must be a real thing if God is to be just and righteous as the Bible says. This is a difficult thing for modern people to accept. We hear so much that God is love. For God’s love to be righteous, true, and just, it must also include the response of wrath to those who reject the light God gives. Paul will talk about grace later. This grace is found only in Jesus Christ. This exclusivity is crucial to the gospel message. We need to hear and read this chapter of Romans, even though it is not pleasant for modern people.
