Romans 3:27-28 Then what becomes of our boasting? It is excluded. By what kind of law? By a law of works? No, but by the law of faith. 28 For we hold that one is justified by faith apart from works of the law.
Trying to obey God’s law can lead to boasting because a person becomes the measure of his or her obedience. A common understanding is that a person may begin to think that he or she is good enough to get to heaven. As long as the good outweighs the bad, a person will get to heave. Our deeds are put on a scale. If the good outweighs the bad, we are good to go. Trying to obey the law can also lead to a form of boasting and spiritual pride. A danger for those who have been around the church for a while is to begin to think they are righteous and holy. This can lead to a sense of accomplishment and feeling that everything is OK. They are holy because they do not do the bad things. Paul has already shown that the Jews who have a similar feeling are guilty because of this spiritual pride. The only way to be justified is through faith because it trusts in God’s help and grace and not one’s ability..
