1 Corinthians 1:9

God is faithful, who has called you into fellowship with his Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.

What a great promise to us. We sometimes talk about being faithful to God and committing our lives to Him. But, we can only love God because God has first loved us (1 John 4:19). This verse comes at the end of the thanksgiving section of this letter, which doubles as a prayer. Paul is confident that God will answer the needs of the Corinthians because this answer is based on the surety of fellowship with Jesus. Often the ending statement of a paragraph in the Bible holds significance and emphasis. That seems to be the case in this opening paragraph. Paul moves towards fellowship with Jesus. God’s faithfulness to us is seen particularly in our ability to have personal and intimate fellowship with Jesus. This gives us confidence to face our challenges. It gives us the spiritual resources to overcome our weaknesses and temptations. It also gives us the goal for the daily, mundane activities we all do. We in in something bigger than our own little world. We can be assured of all this because God is dependable and trustworthy.
